We take great pride in presenting an all-encompassing platform dedicated to women professionals engaged in various disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine, and allied fields throughout India. Additionally, our commitment extends to providing invaluable support to female students aspiring to pursue careers within these domains.
IAP-WiSTEMM stands as a collaborative initiative, jointly undertaken by esteemed institutions – The Indian Academy of Sciences, The Indian National Science Academy, and The National Academy of Sciences, India, along with the active participation of other distinguished academies. Our shared vision revolves around creating a dynamic and equitable ecosystem that empowers women in STEMM to excel and contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge and society.
The issue of underrepresentation of women in science remains a significant global concern. To investigate and explore this matter, the Indian Academy of Sciences’ Council established a committee on ‘Women in Science’ in January 2003. This committee generated numerous initiatives and an action plan for the Council and Fellowship’s consideration. Subsequently, a ‘Women in Science’ (WiS) Panel was formed in January 2005 to execute the committee’s recommendations and propose viable solutions. Dr. Rohini Godbole initially chaired this panel, and it made substantial contributions through various ‘Women in Science‘ programs. A comprehensive gender policy document was drawn up and recommended by IAS in 2021.
Similarly, INSA and NASI also launched ‘Women in Science’ programs, resulting in several reports and recommendations. In 2004, INSA sponsored a report titled ‘Science Career for Indian Women: An Examination of Indian Women’s Access to and Retention in Scientific Careers’. In 2013, another report, ‘Role of Women Scientists as Teachers in the Promotion and Application of Science and Technology’, was sponsored by NASI.
The Inter-Academy Panel of Women in STEMM (IAP-WiSTEMM) was formed in 2014. During a meeting of the Presidents of INSA, IAS, and NASI in Bangalore, Prof. Kasturirangan, the then-President of NASI, announced the establishment of an Inter-Academy Panel on Women in Science by NASI. In 2015, an Inter-Academy Panel for Women in Science was established, with Dr. Manju Sharma serving as the Chairperson and NASI as the nodal academy.
INSA’s Women in Science Panel was established in 2014, with Professor Rohini Godbole as its inaugural chair.
The Inter-Academy Panel for Women in STEMM is governed by a dedicated and diverse committee, ensuring effective management and guidance for all its activities. The committee comprises of a Steering Committee overseeing executive, financial, and other pertinent matters. In addition, we have esteemed committee members who actively contribute to the panel’s initiatives and also participate in specialized Task Forces.
